Genital Herpes Treatments

Genital herpes is a common viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), usually transmitted through sexual contact. There are two types of HSV: type 1, which often causes cold sores but can also infect the genitals, and type 2, which mainly affects the genital area. Once contracted, the virus remains in the body for life and can cause occasional outbreaks of symptoms.

Typical symptoms include small blisters or sores on or around the genitals, buttocks, or thighs. These can be painful and may be accompanied by itching, burning, or tingling sensations before they appear. During an initial outbreak, people may also experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or swollen glands. The first episode is usually the most severe, while later outbreaks tend to be milder and shorter.

Genital herpes is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact with an infected area, even when no visible sores are present. The virus can also spread through oral sex if a partner has a cold sore. Using condoms can reduce the risk of transmission, though it does not provide complete protection, as the virus can affect areas not covered by a condom.
